Landline jargon explained
ISDN - is the means of delivering high volumes of voice, data, text and image to the desk top. ISDN has been the traditional means of connecting digital PBX's to the digital network.
The introduction of digital connectivity through the system's ISDN card allows companies to take advantage of sophisticated features.
* Direct Dialling Inwards (DDI)
* Calling & Called Line Identity
* Trunk to Trunk Connections
* External Divert
Direct Dialling Inwards - DDI is the ability to give an individual extension, a group of extensions or a device its own personal telephone number which can be used to access them directly without intervention from an operator. DDI calls will normally be routed to another destination (e.g. Voice Mail, secretary, colleague) if not answered by the intended extension. With most systems if the targeted extension is busy then busy tone is returned to the caller (or the call follows the divert on busy instruction).
Another use for DDI is to direct calls to groups rather than extensions and consequently the switch must be able to queue the calls. DDI groups enable customers to allocate different telephone numbers for different promotions / products/ services as required without the need for dedicated trunks per number.
Alpha Tagging - With most systems DDI numbers can be alpha tagged so the DDI number's associated name is displayed on the answering terminal's LCD display. In the event the call is transferred to another extension position the alpha tag will go with the call.
Trunk to Trunk Connections - Trunk connection enables external callers to be seamlessly routed back over the network (ISDN2 / 30) to another number such as a mobile phone etc.
External Call Forward - Users can set the system / their extension so that incoming calls can be forwarded to destinations outside of the telephone system (back over the network ISDN2 / 30), e.g. alternative office, mobile, home, etc.
